What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a principal strength and conditioning program that delivers a broad, general, and inclusive fitness. CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of ten recognized fitness domains. They are Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. Learn more at www.crossfit.com.

Is CrossFit for me?

CrossFit is and can be for everyone. The needs of children, advanced athletes and elderly vary greatly. Regardless of your skill level, we have a level of workout that is right for you at CrossFit Waitakere. We have a mixture of beginner CrossFitters to elite CrossFitters and we all work together as a team.

Should I be in fairly good shape before starting CrossFit?

This is often a misconception about CrossFit. Please do not let your current fitness level deter you from trying CrossFit. All of our movements and workouts are scalable – meaning we can adjust them to your fitness level and ability.

I don’t want to get too bulky…

Not to worry. CrossFit will increase lean body mass, but not to the degree most people think. Since CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program and not a bodybuilding program, your results will be a leaner, more toned version of yourself. CrossFit wont make you big- cupcakes and soda will.

Why does CrossFit cost more than a typical gym?

CrossFit methods differ from your typical gym in many ways. Here at CrossFit Waitakere you are not paying just to “utilize” our facility and equipment. Instead you are paying for result-driven training from our experienced coaches. Our classes are small in size in order to enable more one-on-one attention from our coaches.  Our focus is on quality, not quantity. We cost less for one week of training and one hour with a personal trainer at a gym.

I have an injury; can I still participate in CrossFit classes?

Yes, you are still able to participate in our classes. You are taught proper form and movement which can help in the rehabilitation process and promote healing. We will work with you and the injury to provide you with a safe and functional training environment.

I have never done CrossFit, what should I expect?

We run, jump, pull, push, climb, squat, lift, press, carry, throw and catch. We believe in utilizing our entire body. We have also been known to have a little fun… we live by the motto work hard, play hard! A typical CrossFit class starts with a warm-up followed by a WOD (workout of the day) which is led by a certified CrossFit coach. All open classes are 1 hour long, even though the individual workouts vary in length.

What type of diet should I follow?

Here at CrossFit Waitakere we promote and follow the Paleolithic diet, also known as the Caveman diet. We realize that this is not a “one-size fits all” type of diet and therefore we do not force this diet or any type of diet on our members. However, you must understand that proper nutrition is a huge key in the results you will get out of CrossFit.
