Mikey, it is always great having you in class. How long have you been at CFW?
3yrs I’m thinking. It’s an honour being named athlete of the decade…..is that what this is for?
What sort of exercise were you doing before you joined? I know you are a long time surfer and outdoors type of guy.
Haha I need to get in the ocean at least 5 times a week. I love surfing but mix sports up a lot more now.
Do you remember your first CF workout and what it felt like afterwards?
I remember thinking yeah I’m fit as fuck and can take down anyone in the room. Hmmmmm that was my first mistake. Half the movements I couldn’t even do as I had zero mobility. And the other half killed me. I remember everyone cheering me on to finish the wod though. That was cool.
And what is your average exercise week like now?
I try to get to the box everyday I’m not away with work and surf as much as possible.
You are Dad to two awesome kids – how important is staying healthy and fit to you and your family?
Oh man getting old sucks ass and staying fit and healthy is key. Injuries take longer to heal. Diet is super important. The days of drinking endless boxes of beer and eating Georgie pies and still having a 6 pack are gone. I still want to be able to run with the pack and compete in masters events and surf till I can’t surf anymore.
How has it been fitting in regular exercise around your work schedule?
Work gets in the way of life a lot however there seems to be a CrossFit nearby in most countries I go to. The hotels all have gyms but it’s not the same.
What/who motivates you at the box?
Anyone who has the balls to walk into our box inspires and motivates me. Everyone kicks ass. It’s such a cool cross section of the community and a great family to be part of.
I really enjoy the long chipper wods….with the different exercises all thrown in.
I used to dislike certain excercises like snatches, because I couldn’t do them, but I’ve tried to change my mindset and turn them into a challenge and improve on them slowly, very slowly.
Is that a trick question? 15min of bicep curls for a warm up followed by max effort bicep curls followed by 5 x rounds of AB’s exercises tabata style to warm down.
Which coach has the best jokes?
Hard to go past Coach G’s Democrat jokes but Kurt is right up there also. He can be a funny little Ginga.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering starting out at CFW, what would it be?
Don’t be intimidated by Tony standing at the roller door looking like a bouncer at the Apia RSA. CrossFit is just as much a mental game as a physical one. Never give up. You can achieve more than you ever thought possible.
3 facts about me you may not know;
- I can blow bubbles on demand
- I ran a half marathon in Antartica
- I had to jump out of the cab of a runaway logging truck which lost its brakes going down a hill when I was 10yrs old.
